New oil boilers for hospital

2011-01-18 17:25:00

Huddersfield Royal Infirmary has revealed it is replacing its old coal boilers with more environmentally friendly oil and gas boilers.

The hospital boiler room staff are welcoming the change. Ian Naven stated, "It is an emotional day. I think of all the guys who have worked in here over the years, the unsung heroes, who have kept the boilers and the hospital running through all emergencies."

The estate director, Frank Gibbons, said that it was time for a new attitude: "It is an end of an era and also the start of a new cleaner, greener and more efficient and reliable way of heating the hospital."

The old coal boilers would use up as much as 15 tonnes of coal a day and the smoke would head up four black chimneys, which are now expected to be dismantled.

The new boilers will be more efficient and the hospital can ensure they run smoothly by signing up to an oil boiler maintenance scheme, such as the one offered by Team Energy. The scheme covers an annual boiler maintenance, which can help to spot any problems which could lead to a costly and inconvenient breakdown later on.
