Boiler maintenance can help you save household energy

It seems there are endless mixed messages when it comes to energy use and renewables news. So what is the truth about our energy consumption and how can we do our bit to help?

Firstly, we are producing more energy from renewable sources, with 6.7 per cent of energy coming from renewables last year. However, we are a long way off of the targets set for us by the EU for 2020. These would see us producing 15 per cent from renewables in just ten years time.

Offshore wind is the largest growth area when it comes to renewable energy sources, with capacity growing by 61 per cent last year. However, even with this growing use of renewables, more energy is still used in our homes than in industry or transport. In fact, home heating accounts for the largest amount of energy consumption.

So, for those of us who use oil to heat our homes, it’s important to keep an eye on consumption and make sure your home is as energy efficient as possible. Insulation obviously works well, but is not always possible in old farmhouses and rural cottages– which is also where most heating oil is used.

Another measure to boost energy efficiency is signing up for regular boiler maintenance through the Team Energy scheme, which will ensure your boiler and heating system is clean and working to the best of its ability.
